Creating a Wildlife Pond:

Mark out the pond shape that you want using rope, hosepipe or string between sticks. You could also purchase a pre-formed liner, but be aware that you will need to enable  amphibians to exit the water. This can be achieved by the use of emergent or over-hanging plants. The shape of the wildlife pond is not important, but it should have areas of water that are no more than 2-3cm deep as the greatest variety of animals live in very shallow water.

A true wildlife pond tends to periodically dry out, collect debris and can become stagnant. This is fine in thew wild, but you may not wish this in your garden. A deeper area of about a metre would help to prevent this, as water remains at a more constant temperature at this depth in both Summer and Winter. It may also be worth considering the purchase of a pump and filter to clean and circulate the water; keeping it oxygenated all year round.

Check the level of the pond using a piece of wood and a spirit level. This will prevent the liner showing and water running out.

Add the liner. It is best to use underlay, but old carpet can also be used. Remember to remove any sharp stones before adding the underlay and liner.

Keep the edges natural with overhanging turf or large stones.
